I almost sent the sofa to a petrol station. Not as a joke. On universal.at a parcel to an Austrian Hermes shop is free with no minimum, and I had already picked the cubby behind the pumps because I would not be home on a Tuesday. Then a truck icon sat on the furniture line. Freight does not go to a PaketShop. Almost.

That near miss is the shop. Universal Versand GmbH still thinks like a catalogue warehouse even though the last seasonal book left the printer in 2018. I opened the published terms, the delivery FAQ, and the legal notice on 27 September 2026. Sofa stickers move, so I am leaving live euro figures unpublished. What did not move is the fence around the till: Austria only, a German-language checkout, adult private households, and no company account dressed as a consumer sale.

The warehouse kept the peg. It retired the paper.

The imprint still puts the firm at Alte Bundesstraße 2a, 5071 Wals-Siezenheim, just west of Salzburg. Company register FN 235040y at Landesgericht Salzburg. VAT ID ATU57172268. Managing director Mag. Harald Gutschi. Shareholder Otto Austria Group GmbH on the same street. Service sits at 0662/4485-8 and service@universal.at. The AGB file marked 2026/06, still shown as current on 1 September 2026, sells under the KSchG to adult consumers. It does not sell to businesses. The site still names Wirtschaftskammer Österreich, Handelsverband, and Trustmark Austria.

The history page starts in 1968 in Salzburg Liefering, after a 1957 optics branch and a British takeover the year the mail-order name landed. Handelsverband still traces BAUR and Otto from 2001, then UNITO from 2003. Otto Austria Group is the 2024 rename. Group figures for the year ended 29 February 2024 still sit at 349 million euros, with roughly four hundred people in Salzburg, Graz, and Linz. Universal calls itself Austria's third-largest online shop and says more than ninety percent of orders now come through the site or the apps. Home deliveries are described as carbon-neutral since 1 January 2021. The last paper book is a coat still hanging on a peg in that warehouse. The site is the person who still wears it: same pockets, same Salzburg weather, no seasonal drop on the doormat.

Keep the tab open if a truck can legally stop at your door

This login earns its keep for an adult household inside Austria that wants one account for bulky living-room furniture, a household appliance, and a winter coat, and can wait for warehouse freight instead of a same-day store pickup. Invoice after delivery, an evening Hermes cubby, and a paper trail for the extra three-year cover are the useful bits. Frequent furniture buyers should price the yearly club against one truck fee.

• Adult private households with an Austrian delivery address and a German-language checkout they can finish.
• People who want one login for furniture, a household appliance, and clothing, and can wait for a warehouse slot.
• Buyers who prefer invoice after delivery, or a free Hermes cubby for anything that still counts as a parcel.
• Households that will use the extra guarantee in Austria and will keep the invoice as the certificate.
• Repeat freight shoppers who would rather pay a yearly club than a truck fee on every bulky drop.

You can order fabric swatches and wood-surface chips before you commit to a large living-room piece. That is the closest thing this format has to sitting on a sofa. If you need a showroom, you are in the wrong aisle. The terms cap orders at household quantities and only while the line is in stock. I am not rolling a brand list.

Close the tab if you need Munich, a company invoice, or a carry past the gate

Skip it if your door is in Germany, in Switzerland, or in any other place the truck is not allowed to stop. Published shipping rules stop at the Austrian border. Skip it if you are buying as a business. Withdrawal rights and the extra cover stop at Unternehmer. Skip it if you need gift wrap, a same-day counter, or a sofa carried upstairs after a property-line drop. Skip the installment plan if a high-twenties effective rate would hurt. Skip the payment pause on a first order.

• Your ship-to address sits outside Austria, including Germany and Switzerland.
• You are ordering as a company and expected consumer withdrawal or the extra guarantee to follow you.
• You need to sit on the sofa, slam the washer door, or try the jacket under shop lights.
• You assumed a Hermes cubby could swallow freight, or that a driver would carry past the property line for free.
• You wanted gift wrap, a stored copy of the contract text, or a way to flip a live order from invoice to PayPal.
• You planned to finance furniture on the house installment plan even though you could clear a fourteen-day invoice.

Two clocks, and they do not match

The catch: you get fourteen days to pay an invoice and a voluntary thirty days to send unused goods back. Those clocks do not reset each other. Statutory withdrawal is fourteen days from the day you hold the last item. The extra window wants the piece complete, original-packed, unused, and undamaged. Invoice buyers still owe the transfer fourteen days after receipt. The credit lands after the return is booked in, not the afternoon you drop the carton.

Returns posted inside Austria stay free if the original label is on the carton and you hand it to Hermes or a Post branch. A bulky piece is collected if you ring 0662/4485-8 or write service@universal.at inside fourteen days. Request a fresh label in Mein Konto if the slip is gone. Hold onto the counter slip until the refund shows. The terms still name two locker addresses: Paketfach Universal 1 in the 7900 V-Paketzentrum, and Paketfach Universal Linz 1 in 4005 Linz. Follow the label — not the office street on the imprint.

Custom-made goods are out. Sealed hygiene items and unsealed software or media lose withdrawal once opened. Furniture that arrives without a usable carton has to be packed so it survives the trip back. Phones need a factory reset and the PIN gone, or the shop can charge a fifty-euro wipe fee and bounce a locked handset. Supplier-direct lines often need their own parcels. Delivery flat fees can stay on a full-order cancellation. Here is where I got stuck the first time I read the imprint: the pretty Salzburg street is for letters, not for taping a boxed jacket to the office door.

The till runs a check before it shows you a bill

Checkout on my September pass offered invoice, the usual cards, PayPal, and Flexikonto Teilzahlung once the automatic check had run. Once the goods are in your hands you have fourteen days to pay. The invoice names Universal Versand GmbH at Raiffeisenverband Salzburg. Use IBAN AT26 3500 0000 0304 6323 and BIC RVSAAT2S, and type the eight-digit customer number into the reference field. Cards reserve the pre-discount figure, then take the reduced amount when the carton leaves. If the check kills invoice or installments, card and PayPal still sit there. A live invoice order will not flip to PayPal later. Paid invoices stay in Mein Konto for seven years or more and work as the guarantee card. Save the confirmation; the shop does not keep the contract text.

Flexikonto finances baskets up to four thousand euros after a credit check, from ten euros a month and up to sixty months. Interest is one point six five percent per month, compounding to a twenty-one point seven percent effective rate. The published sample still shows about one thousand one hundred and eighty-seven euros back on seven hundred and fifty euros stretched over sixty months. There is no direct-debit option. A Zahlpause pushes the bill out three months, adds a four point nine nine percent surcharge on the merchandise, and will not open on a first order. Optional Zahlschutz, underwritten by Cardif in Vienna, takes one point one five percent of whatever is still open each month and may wipe as much as five thousand euros on a claim. If you can pay the invoice, the house installment plan is a mug's game.

Fees in the words the checkout will not read aloud

What you see on a line is a euro web price with VAT already in it. Speak the bands out loud before you confirm a Hermes cubby, a parcel van, or a truck.

• Parcel van: three euros and ninety-nine cents per order and address. That fee drops off once the merchandise, after coupons, reaches seventy-five euros. An Austrian Hermes cubby is free with no minimum.
• Bulky freight: thirty-nine euros and ninety-nine cents per order, whatever the basket size; a mixed cart pays the freight fee only, not both charges.
• Vorteilsclub: thirty euros for the year. It renews on its own unless you cancel in Mein Konto, and it wipes parcel and freight fees while it lasts.
• Old-appliance collection on a like-for-like freight drop: nineteen euros for a small electric, thirty-nine euros for a large one, on top of the truck fee.
• Late invoice interest: zero point three three percent per month, four percent a year, plus reminder fees that can reach seventeen euros and fifty cents once five hundred euros is owed.
• Locked-device wipe if you skip the factory reset: fifty euros, and the shop can still refuse the return.

Deliveries stay inside Austria. There is no published German or Swiss rate card. Split shipments do not stack extra parcel fees. Pickup cubbies hide in petrol stations and dry cleaners. Bring photo ID. They will hold a parcel for up to ten days. On a first basket, a gift address or a Hermes cubby is allowed only if you pay by card or PayPal. After that, any method the till still offers can ship inside Austria. Nobody will wrap the gift for you.

Miss a parcel doorbell and the courier tries again or dumps it at a pickup point. Freight gets an SMS, an email, a call, or a letter. Some supplier-direct furniture stops at the property line; the truck icon is the warning. Leave a phone number a driver can actually reach. Lead times sit on each line, so a sofa and a pair of jeans may leave different buildings. Photograph transit damage within seven days. Status lives under Meine Bestellungen. The extra three years, and the parts they skip

The legal warranty runs two years from the day the piece arrives. Universal stacks a free three-year XXL guarantee when material, workmanship, or design fails. Repair or a replacement comes first; a refund of the purchase price follows only if both of those are impossible or out of proportion. Your invoice is the card. The extra years stop at the Austrian border. They also skip drops, cracked screens, consumable bits, batteries and chargers, headphones, bulbs, lightning, cosmetic nicks, misuse, unapproved third-party repairs, freebie on-packs, and fitted kitchen programmes the extra-cover page carves away. Company purchases sit outside it. When something fails, send the customer number, the invoice date, the article reference, photos, and the type plate. The phone desk is printed as 07:00 to 22:00 every day.

On freight delivery of a like-for-like appliance, old-unit collection uses the fee band above. Defrost a fridge, drain a washer, and leave the old machine reachable. A downloadable directory lists places that take large appliances and batteries for free. jö Bonus Club members earn one Ö per two euros of article value, credited sixty days after the order, if the card is linked. The company has claimed, since 2011, that every energy-saving household appliance sold funds a tree planted in Austria. Treat that as a house claim, not a slip in the carton.

A Salzburg catalogue house put an app on the warehouse. That helps when a sofa and a washer have to share one Austrian postcode and you want the invoice as proof. Clear the fourteen-day bill if you can. Stretching furniture across sixty months is how a simple sitting-down gets expensive.

Limitations that actually bite: you cannot sit on the foam before you buy. Some furniture stops at the gate. Invoice can vanish after the check. You cannot change payment on a live order. Questions people ask after they have already clicked

Can I ship this to Germany if I pay extra?

No. Section 6 of the terms and the shipping FAQ agree: the truck stays inside Austria. There is no published foreign rate you can add at the till, and Hermes pickup is Austrian shops only. Freight cannot go to a shop. Take a device abroad later and the extra guarantee stays home. A second-order gift address inside Austria works with any method the till still offers; a first order needs card or PayPal for that trick. Graz to Vienna is fine. Munich is not.

If I send it back on day twenty, do I still owe the invoice?

Yes, if you bought on invoice. The fourteen-day payment clock starts when you receive the goods. The voluntary thirty-day return does not pause that transfer. Pay with the eight-digit customer number as the reference, then wait for the credit after the return is booked. For parcels inside Austria the shop covers the return stamp if that original label is still on the box. Freight needs a booked collection. Locked phones, opened hygiene seals, and custom pieces can fail even inside thirty days. Keep the drop-off slip. Do not post the carton to Alte Bundesstraße 2a.

Is the thirty-euro club worth one truck?

The club pays for itself on a single bulky drop this year. One truck at thirty-nine euros and ninety-nine cents already costs more than a thirty-euro year, and members also lose the parcel fee on small baskets. The club renews itself at thirty euros unless you cancel in Mein Konto. If Flexikonto is already on the account, check whether a free club year is attached before you pay for another. Light shoppers who always clear seventy-five euros in parcels and never order furniture can skip it. Treat that thirty euros as postage insurance, not money off a sofa.

Why did invoice or installments vanish at checkout?

Every cart goes through an automatic check. After that, the till only lists the methods that passed. If invoice or Teilzahlung disappears, cards and PayPal remain. First-time installments can demand a deposit. The three-month payment pause is closed on first orders. A card or PayPal basket will not become an invoice later. If you already have an invoice, paying a calculated minimum rate can flip that account into Teilzahlung. Late invoices draw the interest and reminder fees in the band above. Put the eight-digit customer number on the transfer.

Where do I actually send a return, and who collects a sofa?

Stick the label that came with the delivery note on the carton. If it is missing, pull a new one from Mein Konto or call. Hand the parcel to Hermes or Österreichische Post and keep whatever slip they give you. The published return pockets are a parcel locker in the 7900 sorting centre or the Linz locker at 4005, depending on the slip. A sofa is collected after you book pickup with customer service, not after you lean it against the office street in Wals-Siezenheim. Withdrawal forms can still be written to that street; a letter is not the carton route. If the furniture arrived without a carton, you pack it. If a phone still has your PIN, expect the wipe fee or a refusal.

What if the truck only leaves it at the property line?

Then you already agreed to that when the truck icon was on the line. Some supplier-direct furniture stops at the stones or the gate. The driver is not a moving crew. If you need the piece carried upstairs or a weekend slot, this format will not invent that labour. Give a reachable phone number so the announcement actually finds you. A missed window usually means a new appointment. Photograph damage within seven days. If the line never showed a truck mark and a sofa still arrived as freight, keep the packing slip and write service@universal.at.
