Octopus Energy Germany is a household electricity and gas supplier. It is not an investment product and not financial advice. The German company is Octopus Energy Germany GmbH, listed at Amtsgericht München under HRB 231408, at August-Everding-Straße 25, 81671 Munich. It began as 4hundred GmbH, entered in the register on 16 February 2017 in Starnberg. Octopus Energy Group, founded in the United Kingdom by Greg Jackson, acquired 4hundred in 2019 and relaunched the German brand in November 2020, talking then about Kraken, its cloud billing platform. What you buy is a supply contract. The local grid operator still owns the wires and the meter. Switching suppliers does not send a technician to unscrew anything. German basic supply remains the legal backstop, which is why a failed switch does not leave a flat dark. Octopus’s German site sells 100 percent green electricity, OK-Power certified on the tariff pages we read, and also sells gas. Tariffs typically come in 24-month, 12-month, or no-minimum-term flavours, with a one-month notice to the end of the term and a price guarantee that matches the 12- or 24-month choice. Working prices are postcode-specific. This review will not invent a cent-per-kilowatt-hour figure.
Classic, dynamic, heat-pump, EV, Fan Club, and FairFive
The classic tariff is a fixed-shape household rate with human support. Beside it sit products that only make sense with the right hardware. Intelligent Octopus is aimed at electric-car charging. Dynamic Octopus follows wholesale prices, which can look cheap at night and ugly on a tight, cold evening. The heat-pump tariff advertises eight cheaper hours a day for that load, with a separate Munich number 089 38031 600. Fan Club discounts the working price when the wind is actually blowing in your region. FairFive is a five-year wrapper in which Octopus says it will retune the electricity tariff for you each year. Business supply is a different path. None of these products is a savings account.
Green claims need a sober read. Octopus published a 2025 sales mix of 50.9 percent renewable energy with guarantees of origin outside EEG support and 49.1 percent EEG-supported renewables, against a BDEW German mix that still included coal and gas. The electrons in the socket are still the grid mix. What you buy is the contract and the certificates. That is true of almost every German eco tariff. OK-Power is a third-party label worth opening, not a reason to skip the working price and the standing charge. Gas tariffs are fossil fuel sold under the same customer shell. If your goal is to stop burning gas, a tariff change is not a heat-pump.

How a German switch actually runs, including the bits Octopus cannot do for you
The website walk-through is: enter the postcode, pick a tariff, send name, address, consumption, meter data, and a SEPA mandate. Octopus says it will terminate the old supplier and email each step. Supply is supposed to continue throughout. The Wechselgarantie language promises no blackout, coverage of proven extra costs if the switch goes wrong under stated conditions, and 50 euros if you are unhappy with the switch process. Read the footnotes. Two exceptions sit in the company’s switching FAQ. If you are using a special cancellation right because the current supplier raised prices, only you can exercise that right. If you want delivery to start inside about four weeks, market deadlines may stop Octopus from cancelling the old contract for you.
Your current contract still has a notice period. Many German household tariffs need a month’s notice at term end. If you are still inside a minimum term without a special right, a new signup can sit as a future switch rather than an instant escape. Grundversorgung can be left on shorter notice. Bonuses are the usual trap. Octopus’s FAQ says the loyalty bonus is credited after a year of supply on the first annual statement and is lost if you leave earlier. German household bills split into energy procurement, grid fees, and taxes and levies. Octopus controls the first slice. Your Netzbetreiber sets the second. The state sets much of the third. A price guarantee that covers “almost all” components still needs the current AGB: some legal surcharge changes can pass through. Standing charges matter as much as cents per kilowatt-hour if you are a low-consumption flat. Dynamic and wind-linked products need a meter that can actually settle those intervals. If you do not have a smart meter, ask which tariffs are even offered at your MaLo before you fall for a headline.
Kraken is the back-office system Octopus licensed widely in other countries. In Germany it shows up as an app-and-web account where you should be able to send meter readings, see instalments, and download bills. Instalments are estimates. The annual statement trues them up. If your consumption changed because you added a heat pump or a car, raise the Abschlag yourself rather than waiting for a painful bill. Cancellations and withdrawals, according to the German FAQ, go through the account or email, not through a phone agent taking a verbal termination. The 14-day Widerruf runs from contract confirmation. If supply already started, you can owe payment for energy used.
Octopus Energy Germany is a real Munich supplier with a UK technology stack. It will not make you rich, it will not insulate your walls, and a bonus that needs twelve months of supply is not a first-month coupon.

Who should switch, who should wait, and the comparison homework
Switch if you are on Grundversorgung, if your term is ending inside the next two months, or if you have a documented special cancellation right you will exercise yourself. Switch if you want a named green tariff and a service desk that answers in German on a freephone line. Wait if you are six months into a cheap locked rate you would forfeit, if you are moving in three weeks and the MaLo is about to change, or if you only have a dynamic-tariff appetite without the meter to settle it. Compare at least the local utility, one other national discounter, and Octopus on the same consumption and the same first-year-versus-second-year basis. Include the standing charge.
Caveats that belong in every German energy article belong here too. A supplier can still adjust prices after a guarantee window. A supplier can exit the market; your grid operator then keeps the lights on. Deposit demands are uncommon for clean SEPA households but appear in some German contracts after payment trouble. Octopus is not your electrician and not a heat-pump installer even though it sells a heat-pump tariff. If a door-to-door seller claims to be Octopus, hang up and use the official domain. Never send a copy of your last bill to a chat account that is not the company’s.

Can I lose power or gas while switching to Octopus?
In normal German market communication, no. The grid operator’s duty to keep the connection live is independent of which retailer invoices you. If a switch file is rejected, you typically stay with the old supplier or fall into Grundversorgung rather than into a dark kitchen. Octopus’s own guarantee is an extra commercial promise on top of that legal structure, with conditions about correct data and documented extra costs. You should still enter the meter number carefully. A wrong MaLo is the usual amateur error. If you are taking a meter live for the first time after a move, say so in the form; a supplier change and a move-in are different processes.
Do I need to cancel my old supplier myself?
Usually no. Octopus says it handles the termination. Two documented exceptions: a special cancellation right after a price increase must be used by you personally, and a requested start inside roughly four weeks may be too tight for them to cancel on your behalf. If you are already out of contract and on monthly notice, the new supplier’s process is the standard path. Keep sending meter readings to whoever still bills you until the confirmation names a start date. Do not stop paying the old Abschlag early; you will still owe energy until the switch date. If a second confirmation appears from the old utility, read it before you ignore it.
Is the loyalty bonus guaranteed cash on day one?
No. The German FAQ says you receive it after a year of supply, netted on the first annual bill, and that leaving earlier forfeits it. That design is common among German retailers and is why a portal’s first-year saving tile can vanish in year two. Read whether the bonus is per electricity contract, per gas contract, or once per household. Read whether a move to a new MaLo resets the clock. If you need the cheapest possible second year, a no-bonus tariff with a lower working price can beat a bonus tariff. Withdrawal within 14 days is separate: it undoes the contract, it does not pay you a bonus. None of this is investment guidance.

Octopus Energy Germany is a licensed Munich retailer with a UK parent, a Kraken account, OK-Power-labelled green electricity, optional gas, and a reasonably plain German FAQ about notice periods and bonuses. It is a credible alternative to a sleepy Stadtwerk if your contract is actually free to leave and you like the specialist tariffs. It is not a shortcut around insulation, and it is not a financial product. Put in the real annual kilowatt-hours, read the Widerruf and bonus lines, and let the grid stay boring in the background. That boring grid is the feature that makes switching safe.
