Transavia Buying Guide: 40×30×20 Under-Seat Reality, Paid Seats, and Why a KLM Ticket Is Still a Different Computer

Transavia (transavia.com) is Air France-KLM’s low-cost arm: Transavia Airlines C.V. in the Netherlands and Transavia France S.A.S., flying short- and medium-haul from bases such as Amsterdam Schiphol and Paris Orly. Fares unbundle under-seat hand luggage, optional cabin trolleys, hold bags, and seats; it is not a KLM long-haul product and not a booking guarantee.

Transavia Buying Guide: 40×30×20 Under-Seat Reality, Paid Seats, and Why a KLM Ticket Is Still a Different Computer

Two companies, one orange site, and a KLM parent that does not mean KLM service

Transavia’s conditions of carriage name Transavia Airlines C.V. and Transavia France S.A.S. together as the carrier you actually fly. The first is the Dutch operation historically centred on Amsterdam Schiphol; the second is the French low-cost unit with a large Paris Orly presence and other French bases that rotate with the season. Both sit in the Air France-KLM group. That corporate fact explains why some itineraries appear on KLM.com with an HV flight number. It does not mean the cabin will have a KLM meal tray, SkyPriority as you know it from mainline, or the same app for seat maps. Flying Blue can still credit qualifying Transavia fares; elite benefits that work on a KL metal often stop at the HV door. Read the Transavia fare tile, not the group brand on the email header.

The network is short- and medium-haul leisure and VFR flying: Mediterranean, North Africa, and European cities rather than a transatlantic widebody product. Aircraft are single-aisle. Buy-on-board is the catering model unless a specific fare bundle says otherwise. If you need a lie-flat seat, a checked-bag-inclusive long-haul allowance, and a through-ticket culture that assumes two widebodies, you want KLM, Air France, or another full-service carrier—not an HV hop that happens to connect to one. This article is informational. It does not hold inventory, freeze a fare, or promise that a screenshot from last Tuesday still books.

Under-seat 40×30×20 is included; the overhead trolley is a product you add

Current help pages state that every passenger may take one piece of hand luggage up to 40×30×20 cm including handles and wheels, placed under the seat in front, with a 10 kg cap on that piece in the wording used for the small bag. An umbrella, walking stick, and a duty-free bag are listed as extras. The roller bag most people call “cabin luggage” is a separate cabin bag, commonly max 55×40×25 cm or 55×35×25 cm depending on the fare document year—always measure including wheels and believe the booking path in front of you. Cabin-bag space is limited by aircraft type; Smart/Max-style fares that include a trolley also push you toward an early boarding group so the bag actually fits. Combined weight of small bag plus trolley is described as 10 kg on Max-style pages. That is not Ryanair’s current template and not KLM’s 55×35×25 plus extras culture. Measure at home.

  • Hand luggage included: about 40×30×20 cm under the seat; weigh it—gate staff will
  • Optional cabin bag: trolley-class dimensions on the live fare card; overhead space is finite
  • Hold bags: added by piece and weight; conditions cap pieces and per-bag kilograms on the website tables
  • Seats: selection is typically a paid extra except where a high fare bundle includes a seat
  • Boarding: zone or group printed on the pass; late to the gate can mean the trolley is tagged to the hold
  • Partner tickets: KLM- or Delta-issued HV segments follow Transavia’s baggage grid, not the long-haul marketing carrier’s brochure

Hold baggage is never “whatever fit in the car.” You declare pieces and kilograms while booking or later in My Transavia, with published maxima (multiple pieces, a per-item ceiling in the 32 kg class, and a passenger total that the conditions cap). Sports gear and pets are separate SKUs. The expensive mistake is arriving with a 56 cm carry-on on a Basic-style fare and paying the airport gate penalty the airline itself advertises as €70 or more, with the bag then going in the hold anyway. Add the trolley in the app while it is still a web fee. Plus/Max-style bundles that include 20 kg or 30 kg hold weight exist so families can stop à-la-carte maths; they are still not a KLM World Business bag policy. Recheck the fare name on your date—Transavia has used Basic/Plus/Max and Smart/Max labelling in adjacent years.

Seat maps, codeshares, and the connection that looks short on a KLM e-ticket

Pre-paid seats on transavia.com are straightforward when the PNR was born on Transavia stock: you pay, you pick, you still may be re-seated for operational reasons. When the same orange 737 is sold as a KLM marketing flight, passengers routinely cannot pay for a seat in either app. Help pages for partner bookings confirm that check-in, bags, and onboard service follow Transavia rules even if you bought at KLM.com. Do not plan a family block of six window seats on an HV codeshare without a fallback. At the airport, the HV check-in zone is not the KLM transfer desk you used last year. If sitting together is non-negotiable, book native Transavia fares or accept airport assignment.

Self-transfer between a KLM long-haul and a separately ticketed Transavia hop is the other failure mode: bags may need reclearing, minimum connection times that work on one ticket fail on two, and disruption protection does not automatically span two contracts. Even on a single ticket, HV–KL connections can mean a different terminal flow at Schiphol than two KLM flights. Tight connections plus two hold bags plus a family that still has to buy a cabin trolley at the gate is how people miss Morocco. Build slack. If the itinerary is intercontinental, price a KLM-operated second leg before you “save” on HV. easyJet and Ryanair will not save a missed KLM inbound either; the point is not which LCC logo is nicer, it is whether the ticket is one contract.

Run the same dates once as a native Transavia booking and, if relevant, once as a KLM-marketed HV segment so you see which computer owns seats and bags.

Transavia is a correctly priced short-haul machine if you pack to 40×30×20 or pay for the trolley before the airport. It becomes expensive theatre when you treat an HV codeshare like a KLM domestic and show up with mainline assumptions about seats, snacks, and connections.

easyJet, Ryanair, and KLM mainline: pick the operating model, not the logo colour

easyJet is the closest product: allocated seats for a fee, a small under-seat bag on cheap fares, and an optional larger cabin bag, with a denser UK/Italian network than HV. Ryanair is stricter on the sizer and often cheaper if you never check a bag and can use secondary airports. KLM mainline from Schiphol is the full-service contrast: included cabin bag on most fares, a different disruption culture, Flying Blue benefits that actually attach to the cabin you sit in, and long-haul. Transavia wins on some sun routes from Orly or Schiphol where KLM simply does not put a 737 at a useful time. It loses when you needed a through-checked bag from a widebody to a beach hop with 50 minutes on the clock. Price the total with bags and seats; the bare fare is a marketing number.

  • Skip Transavia if you need a full-service long-haul cabin, meals, and a lie-flat overnight
  • Skip if you insist on tight Schiphol connections with several hold bags and no single-ticket protection
  • Skip if sitting together is mandatory and the only inventory is a KLM-stock HV codeshare
  • Skip if you will only pack a 55 cm roller and refuse to pay for it until the gate
  • Use it for leisure short-haul from Schiphol or Orly when you can add bags in the app
  • Use KLM instead when the second leg is intercontinental or you need elite-style airport flow

FAQ: KLM-stock check-in, Flying Blue bags, date changes, and the 40-centimetre sizer

If I booked on KLM.com, can I check in on transavia.com?

Often not in the way you expect. Partner-booking FAQs on Transavia’s help centre exist because the reservation lives on KLM (or Delta) stock. Online check-in for the HV sector may be blocked, delayed until you reach the transfer airport, or limited to a separate HV record locator that still will not sell seats. Follow the operating carrier’s airport signage. Bags should follow Transavia’s piece and size rules even if the e-mail says KLM. If that split is unacceptable, do not buy the codeshare. Native transavia.com PNRs behave more like a normal LCC: app check-in, paid extras, and a barcode that matches the orange tail.

Does Flying Blue status get me a free trolley or a KLM-style extra bag?

Do not assume it. Transavia fare conditions publish their own included items; partner pages warn that onboard service on HV is Transavia’s, not the marketing airline’s. Some elite perks that fire on KL metal are silent on HV. Miles and XP may still post according to the fare family and the programme rules in force. If a free cabin bag is the only reason you fly the group, price KLM-operated metal. If you just want the orange 737 at 06:55 to Alicante, buy the trolley as a Transavia extra and treat Flying Blue as a possible bonus, not as a luggage policy.

Can I change the flight 14 days out without buying a whole new ticket?

Higher bundles (Max-style fares in recent conditions) include more flexibility to change date or route with a fare difference rather than a punitive lock-in. Cheaper tiles do not. Exact hours, change fees, and whether name changes exist belong on the fare conditions PDF for your booking date, not in a review that would go stale. Open My Transavia and the conditions link in the footer before you assume a beach holiday is elastic. Paying for flexibility after a Basic-style purchase is usually worse than having bought the higher tile. This is still not a full-service reissue desk that will rebook you through CDG as a courtesy.

What if my 40×30×20 backpack is 42 cm because of a bottle pocket?

Then it is not 40×30×20. Sizers include handles, wheels, and bulging pockets. The airline’s own boarding notes warn that oversized cabin pieces pick up a steep gate fee and go in the hold. Compress, restow, or buy the cabin-bag product while it is still a website price. Arguing that another LCC allowed 45 cm last month is not a Transavia policy. If you routinely travel with a camera backpack that only fits the trolley dimensions, budget that SKU on every HV flight. Measuring at home is the entire low-cost skill; everything else is theatre at the jetway.

Is Transavia safer or worse than easyJet on the same Spanish runway?

This is not a safety ranking. Both are established EU low-cost operators on short-haul jets with EU consumer rules on delays and cancellations that still have LCC-shaped customer-service queues. Choose by airport, bag maths, and whether you need a Dutch or French originating bank of flights. Ryanair may be cheaper to a farther airport. KLM may be saner if you are connecting from intercontinental. Transavia is the group’s leisure 737 tool. Reliability on a given morning is a weather and crew puzzle no review can certify. Check the live operating schedule, then pack to the sizer.

Add the cabin trolley, hold pieces, and seats on transavia.com, then compare that total with easyJet, Ryanair, and KLM on the same dates.

Verdict: book HV as an LCC with a group parent, not as miniature KLM

Transavia is a rational short-haul buy from Schiphol or Orly when you understand the 40×30×20 default, pay for overhead space early, and keep connections honest. It is the wrong buy for long-haul product, for codeshare seat control, or for travellers who will only learn the sizer at the gate. easyJet and Ryanair compete on the same maths; KLM competes on a different product. Use transavia.com for native PNRs, read the current fare names, and treat any KLM-issued HV segment as Transavia rules wearing a different e-ticket header.
