The rail is the product, the photo is not
Max & Lily makes kids’ beds, loft beds, and bunks in wood, sold from maxandlily.com to US addresses and, on a different ladder, to Canada. On 27 September 2026 the fit guide on that site still wanted about five inches of mattress under a fourteen-inch guardrail. I am using that dated check because the geometry does not care about this month’s sale. A plump pillow-top on a raised bed eats the rail. The child is then sleeping behind a lip, not a barrier. If you only looked at the lifestyle photo, you bought the wrong mattress later.
This is a furniture company, not a mattress company. The frame arrives in boxes, with a slat system you assemble. The mattress is your problem, and it has to be short enough. Measure the rail height on the spec sheet of the exact SKU, then subtract the mattress you already own. If you do not own one yet, shop for a mattress that fits the rail, not the other way around.
- Buy it if two adults can assemble a wood frame and you will measure the mattress.
- Buy it if the sleeper is a child and the rail height still means something after the mattress.
- Skip it if you want an adult hotel bed on a loft.
- Skip it if you need the bed this weekend. Processing has run two to five business days before it even ships.
Shipping is the part people miss
Orders have been processed in the US and then sent FedEx Ground from a South Carolina or California warehouse. On that 27 September check, one shipping page said free shipping on continental US orders over four hundred dollars, while an FAQ still mentioned three hundred fifty. Checkout is the number that counts. Canada was a paid FedEx ladder. Alaska and Hawaii were priced like express. A preorder can hold the whole cart. Do not mix a preorder shelf with a birthday bed unless you can wait for both.
Open the frame you want and read the mattress thickness before you add it.

Assembly and the room
These frames are real wood, not a one-night inflatable. You need floor space to build, a second person, and a ceiling height that still leaves sitting room on the loft. A low ceiling plus a loft is how people end up with a bed nobody can climb. Stairs versus a ladder is a product choice on the site. Read which one you clicked. Returns of assembled beds are miserable in every furniture category. Check parts against the packing list before you build, and photograph damage before the driver leaves.
Questions
What mattress thickness? Use the live fit guide for that frame. The September 2026 note was about five inches under a fourteen-inch rail. Confirm the current sheet.
Is shipping free? Trust checkout. The site has contradicted itself between FAQ and shipping page.
Can I rush it? Rush has been continental US only, after processing, and some vendor-direct pieces skip it.
Is it for adults? Some frames are sized for kids. Read the weight and age line. Do not guess from the photo.
Match the mattress to the rail on the product page, then look at shipping.
