Goldcar Review: Cheap European Airport Hire, Excess Deposits, and the Insurance Extras That Change the Bill

Goldcar is Europcar Mobility Group’s leisure car-hire brand, with more than 120 offices at airports and tourist destinations and a fleet of more than 60,000 vehicles. Headline rates include compulsory third-party cover and basic collision protection with an excess held as a card deposit unless you buy Goldcar’s own Relax packages.

Goldcar Review: Cheap European Airport Hire, Excess Deposits, and the Insurance Extras That Change the Bill

What Goldcar is: a low-cost leisure brand, not a mystery broker

Goldcar is the low-cost leisure badge inside Europcar Mobility Group, sitting beside Europcar, Fox in the United States, and Euromobil in Germany. The company dates itself to 1985. Brand pages describe more than 120 hire offices at airports and tourist destinations, a fleet of more than 60,000 vehicles, and a focus on holiday routes. Goldcar Spain SLU is listed at Camino del Campet, San Juan de Alicante. Legal notices name operating companies or franchisees across Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Croatia, Greece, and Turkey, with further franchise markets including the Netherlands, Malta, Cyprus, and others. goldcar.com is the booking door this review uses. Local terms still vary by pickup office.

The commercial offer is a low headline day rate at Mediterranean and other leisure airports. You book a group, not a registration plate. Economy, compact, SUV, family, and people-carrier bands are advertised; hybrids and electrics appear in the mix where the local fleet has them. Specific models are not guaranteed. That is standard rental practice and it is how a 60,000-car leisure fleet is yield-managed through summer. If you need an automatic, a child seat, or extra drivers, those are extras with their own lines, not assumptions baked into the 20-euro web fare. The cheap rate is real as a starting number. It is incomplete as a budget until you know excess, fuel, and whether you will buy Goldcar cover at the desk.

Europcar Mobility Group’s own reporting describes Goldcar as a European low-cost leader. That positioning explains both the airport density in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France and the complaint pattern that follows budget hire everywhere: deposits, fuel, and insurance upsells. This review will not pretend the cars are the problem. Fleet age is advertised as young because vehicles are cycled. The friction is almost always at the counter and at return, where excess holds, optional Relax products, and damage photos decide whether the holiday rate stays a holiday rate.

What is already in the rate, and what the excess actually means

Goldcar states that every hire includes compulsory motor insurance and complementary third-party liability when the car is used correctly. Basic Goldcar cover in the rate also addresses collision damage, theft, and accidental fire or vandalism, subject to the rental terms. That package is not zero-excess comprehensive cover. An excess remains: a maximum you can be asked to pay toward damage. Goldcar blocks that amount on a credit or debit card at pickup. If the car comes back without new damage, the hold is released. Excess size varies by vehicle group and office. A Rome terms PDF reviewed for this article capped the damage-related deposit at 950 euros if you decline the optional Relax products, then cut that hold to 300 euros with Relax or 100 euros with Super Relax or Mega Relax. Your confirmation email and the hire agreement at the desk are the figures that bind you, not a review.

Third-party excess reimbursement insurance, often sold by brokers as ERI, is treated by Goldcar as a claim-later product. Goldcar’s insurance pages say those policies can be valid between you and the insurer and still will not stop Goldcar taking the full excess hold. If there is damage, Goldcar charges the deposit; you reclaim from the other insurer. Only Goldcar’s own Relax products reduce or remove that hold at the counter. That single operational fact is why desk staff push Super Relax even when you wave a PDF from a comparison site. They are not required to treat your ERI as their excess waiver. Budget for the hold if you decline their cover, and use a card with enough limit. A debit card that cannot support a 950-euro block is how cheap hires collapse at 10 p.m. in an arrivals hall.

  • Basic rate: third-party liability plus Goldcar’s basic damage/theft/fire cover, with an excess.
  • Card hold: can be up to 950 euros without Relax products, per sample station terms; check your office PDF.
  • Relax: marketed as covering common bodywork damage, basic roadside help, deposit about 300 euros in that sample.
  • Super Relax: Goldcar’s best-seller pitch; damage, theft, keys, battery, 24-hour roadside and towing; low or no excess hold in marketing copy, 100 euros in the sample terms.
  • Mega Relax: Super Relax plus premium roadside help, including some refuelling-error language in the marketing list.
  • Exclusions Goldcar lists even on Relax pages: empty tank, negligent engine damage, serious interior damage without an accident, off-road recovery, special cleaning, fine administration, some glass.

Price the car group on goldcar.com, then open that office’s rental terms for deposit, fuel, and Relax costs before you fly.

Desk pressure, Which? findings, and how to pick up without improvising

Which? and British newspapers have repeatedly filmed or mystery-shopped Goldcar desks at Spanish airports, including Malaga and Alicante. Investigators who had already bought third-party excess cover reported staff saying they had no protection, that they would pay for the whole car, or that their ERI only covered the other vehicle. Which? said those lines contradicted Goldcar’s own basic CDW. Goldcar and Europcar have, in past responses to such stories, said the conduct did not match policy. You do not need to relitigate every investigation to use the practical lesson: print or download the booking confirmation, the included cover summary, and any ERI policy, and do not buy Super Relax because someone raised their voice. You may still choose Super Relax because you do not want a 950-euro hold. That is a cash-flow decision, not a moral one.

Pickup discipline is boring and it works. Photograph every panel, wheel, glass, and the fuel gauge before you leave the lot, with a timestamp. Walk around with the agent if they will walk. Do not accept “we will note it later.” If the queue is long, that is not a reason to skip photos. Child seats, GPS, additional drivers, and after-hours fees are lawful extras when they were disclosed; they are ambushes when they were not on the booking. Fuel is often full-to-full; some stations sell a Smart Return-style option to bring the car back short of full for a fee. Returning a car dirty enough to need special cleaning is on Goldcar’s exclusion list even with Relax. Sand, spilled sangria, and beach towels have billed more than a tank of petrol.

Fuel, documents, and the extras that sit beside insurance

Bring the driving licence the booking required, plus an international permit if your licence needs one for that country. Goldcar’s site notes EU licence rules in the usual way: if your licence is accepted, you drive; if it is not, you do not. Second drivers are rarely free on leisure brands. Cross-border travel, ferry use, and driving in islands or on dirt tracks can be restricted in the office terms. Rescue on roads not suitable for driving is an exclusion on the Relax marketing page. That means beaches and forest tracks. A compact car from an airport is not a hire-and-forget dune buggy.

Super Relax marketing lists paint and bodywork, wheels and tyres, windows and mirrors, undercarriage, lost keys, battery recharge, and taxi or towing after an accident. Mega Relax adds premium roadside assistance and talk of interior and exterior damage plus some refuelling errors. The same pages still exclude running out of fuel, negligent engine damage, serious interior damage without an accident, off-road rescue, special cleaning, speeding and parking fine handling, and some window breakage. Read that twice. “Full cover” in rental English is a product name, not a dictionary definition. The daily price of Super Relax is set per office and length of hire and is shown during booking or at the desk. This review will not invent a euro-per-day figure that Goldcar itself says varies.

  • Carry the confirmation, ID, licence, and the card you used to book; many desks will not switch payer.
  • Photograph the car and the fuel gauge before the barrier, and again at return before you hand over keys.
  • Decide on Relax versus ERI plus a large hold while you still have wifi, not while a queue stares at you.
  • Know the fuel rule: full-to-full versus a prepaid or Smart Return product.
  • Refuse extras you already booked, and pay only for extras you actually want.
  • Keep motorway vignettes, environmental stickers, and city ZTL rules separate; Goldcar is not your sat-nav lawyer.

Goldcar is a rational buy when the group rate is low and you either fund the excess hold or buy Goldcar’s own Relax product with your eyes open. It is a miserable buy if you treat the web fare as the bill and improvise insurance in an arrivals hall.

Where Goldcar makes sense on a European itinerary

Goldcar makes sense for a week of coastal hopping out of Alicante, Malaga, Palma, Faro, Rome Fiumicino, or similar leisure airports where the brand is dense and the alternative is a taxi monopoly. It makes less sense if you need a one-way inland drop, a precise model, or a silent desk. Franchise countries can feel different from Spanish corporate stations; the legal notice is the map of who you are actually contracting with. If a broker booked the car, you still sign Goldcar’s hire agreement and Goldcar’s deposit rules. The broker voucher is not a second insurance company.

Damage claims after return are where leisure hire reputations go to die. Timestamped photos are your evidence. If Goldcar charges the hold, an ERI insurer wants those photos, the charge receipt, and the damage report. Super Relax customers still need to follow accident procedure in the terms, because exclusions exist. Neither path is “hassle-free” in the advertising sense. One path is a larger card hold and a possible reclaim. The other is a higher daily rate and a smaller hold. Pick one on purpose.

FAQ

Is Goldcar part of Europcar? Yes. Europcar Mobility Group lists Goldcar as its European low-cost brand. Do the cars include insurance? Compulsory third-party cover and basic damage/theft/fire protection sit in the rate, with an excess. Will my credit-card or broker ERI cancel the deposit? Goldcar says no; it still blocks the excess and you claim back later. What are Relax, Super Relax, and Mega Relax? Optional Goldcar products that reduce the hold and widen vehicle damage and roadside cover, with published exclusions. How big is the fleet? Goldcar cites more than 60,000 vehicles and 100-plus destinations. Do I get the exact model I clicked? No. You get a car in the booked group.

Where are the offices? Airports and tourist areas across Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, and further markets listed in the legal notice, including franchise locations. Is pressure selling documented? Which? has published undercover work at Spanish Goldcar desks alleging misleading insurance lines; go in with documents. What about fuel? Follow the station rule; some offer a paid option to return with less fuel. Can I ignore glass and tyres on Super Relax? Marketing lists wheels, tyres, windows, and mirrors as covered on Super Relax, while a separate exclusions list still mentions some window breakage. That contradiction is why the office PDF beats a blog. Read the appendix for your station.

A checkout checklist that fits in your notes app

Search goldcar.com for the airport and dates. Note the group, mileage cap if any, and the included cover. Download that office’s rental terms. Add the expected hold to your card limit. Decide Relax versus ERI. Photograph the car. Drive. Photograph the car. Return on time, on fuel, without beach sand in the footwells. If a desk script disagrees with the PDF, ask for a supervisor and keep the conversation about the written terms. That is the entire method for using a low-cost leisure brand without financing someone else’s commission target.

Compare groups on goldcar.com, then add deposit and Relax prices from the station terms so the airport desk is not your first look at the real cost.
